Privacy Policy
Last updated October 15, 2026
The short version. The Toktail app doesn't send us anything. This website keeps one log: when you click a download button, we record the time, your IP address, your operating system and CPU type, your browser's user agent and your country. We use it to count downloads and to see which platforms to support. IP addresses and user agents are deleted after 90 days. There are no cookies, ads, analytics or third-party scripts on this site.
Who we are
Toktail and this website (the "Site") are run by Play and Prosper ("we", "us"). Toktail was built by Andrei (@andreimerlescu). For privacy questions or requests, email [PRIVACY CONTACT EMAIL]. For anything else, open an issue at github.com/playandprosper/toktail.
The Toktail app
Toktail runs on your own computer. It has no account, no telemetry and no analytics, and it never sends your data to us.
- Your token counts are written to CSV files in a folder on your computer.
- Prompts are stored as fingerprints (one-way hashes) by default. If you turn on prompt capture, the prompts and responses are encrypted and stay on your computer.
- The app only talks to services you set up yourself: your LM Studio hosts, your own S3-compatible bucket if you turn on backup, and 1Password or HashiCorp Vault if you choose one to hold your keys.
- "Ask Pip" sends your question to your own model on your own LM Studio host.
What the Site records
The Site records something only when you click a download button. Each click goes through our download address, which writes one row to our database and then sends your browser on to the file on GitHub.
| What | Example | Kept for |
|---|---|---|
| Date and time | 2026-10-15 18:04:11 UTC | As long as the Site runs |
| IP address | 203.0.113.42 | 90 days |
| Operating system | macOS | As long as the Site runs |
| CPU architecture | Apple silicon (arm64) | As long as the Site runs |
| Browser user agent | Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; …) Safari/605.1.15 | 90 days |
| Country | US | As long as the Site runs |
| File and version downloaded | Toktail-0.4.0.zip | As long as the Site runs |
Your operating system and CPU type are read by the page from your browser so the right file is offered. The country is recorded only when the server in front of the Site supplies one from your IP address; otherwise it is left blank. Visits from crawlers and command-line tools are not recorded, and more than ten downloads a minute from one address are served but not counted.
Why we record it
- To show an honest download count on the Site.
- To see which operating systems and CPU types people use, so we know which builds to make.
- To spot abuse, such as scripts inflating the counter or hammering the download address.
If you are in the EU, UK or a similar jurisdiction, our legal basis is our legitimate interest in running and improving the project. We don't use this data to identify you, build a profile, target ads or contact you.
What the Site doesn't do
- No cookies, local storage identifiers or fingerprinting.
- No analytics, ads or social media widgets.
- No third-party fonts, scripts or images: everything on the page is served from this domain.
- The public counters show totals only. The live token counter shows totals from the developer's own machine and receives nothing from visitors.
Who else sees data
We don't sell, rent or share the download log. Two parties handle your request as part of how the web works:
- Our hosting provider runs the server the Site lives on and the database with it. Like any host, it carries your request to deliver the Site. [HOSTING PROVIDER AND LINK TO ITS PRIVACY POLICY]
- GitHub serves the files you download. Your browser connects to GitHub directly for the download. See GitHub's privacy statement.
We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Your choices and rights
You can download Toktail without being recorded by getting it straight from GitHub. You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by emailing [PRIVACY CONTACT EMAIL] with your IP address and the approximate time you downloaded. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object, to restrict processing, and to complain to your data protection authority.
Security
The download log lives in a database that only the Site's code and the project maintainers can read. Access to the export is protected by a secret token.
Children
The Site is not directed at children under 13 (16 in the EU), and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the Site records, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
